The bacterial flora, common guest as a conjunctival saprophyte, can become pathogenic due to local and/or systemic factors. In this study differences in the conjunctival bacterial stocks as found in the two eyes of the same patient waiting for cataract surgery are investigated. In 53% of cases the samples turned out to be negative in both eyes whereas in the 8.2% of cases they showed the presence of pathogenic bacteria and in the 38.5% not pathogenic bacteria are found in one or both eyes. The distribution of such a bacterial flora seems to prefer one of the two eyes in about half of the cases.
